Before the standard
The foldnamed 1786
In a 1786 letter, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg noted that a sheet whose sides are in the ratio √2 to 1 is the only shape that halves into two sheets of the very same proportion. Walter Porstmann built the German DIN 476 standard on it in 1922; it spread to become ISO 216. That is why an A4 folded once is exactly an A5, and why a photocopier scales A4 up to A3 with nothing cropped. US Letter has no such trick — its origin is murky, commonly traced to the working size of hand papermaking moulds, and it survives on inertia alone.
